Finding Your Niche

Author: Bette Miles-Holleman

There are any number of general job boards on the internet, which are ok for finding average paying jobs in a number of non-management, entry level positions. But where do you go if you’re a certified IT professional, specialist or executive type? Don’t expect to find what you’re looking for on Monster or CareerBuilder. While it’s a good idea to post résumés on those sites, you’ll need to hunt elsewhere to find the job you’re REALLY looking for.

Here are just a few of my picks from Weddles.com’s User’s Choice Awards, as chosen by the public each year. Weddle’s publishes a printed guide to internet job hunting each year. Most professionals post on five job boards on average, so make your submissions count!

The best general job board covering most fields was SimplyHired.com. It includes a large offering of mainstream job categories, as well as seasonal, temporary and internship listings. SnagAJob.com is also a great resource for those just entering- or re-entering-the job market, with a wide selection of entry level positions in various industries across the country

JobCircle.com and Jobing.com were both excellent resources for people looking for specialized/niche positions in local markets. Job hunters can search for job listings by zip code. CollegeRecruiter.com and VetJobs.com are directed towards those emerging from college or the military.

There’s no shortage of executive job boards online, either. ExecuNet, 6FigureJobs and TheLadders.com are the best choices for finding new employment, according to users’ ratings and comments.

Of course, you’ll need to make sure that you use résumé networking sites, such as LinkedIn as a base for your niche job search. You can print your personal site link on business cards, tag your résumés so it will show up in relevant searches when employers or job recruiters search the site, and have references for all your previous employers and colleagues in one easy to find spot. This makes it easy for prospective employers and recruiters to find you, so you can find the job that best suits your needs.
